Shall I talk about the BBS I ran ten years for free? Or how about the other services I have, and do contribute to those around me? Do you really want to start comparing personal contributions to our various communities? The point was, BVARC, as an organization, does a relatively poor job of remembering the individuals who have done the most to form and shape the Amateur Radio community in this area over the decades.
From: BVARC [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bruce via BVARC Sent: Sunday, March 8, 2015 5:17 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BVARC] Frosty's memory you know, those that find a need to create a memory for a loved one or a friend are really doing it for themselves. if you stop to think about it, when was the last time you thanked that elmer for helping get you into the hobby? or thank that qsl manager for sending you a much wanted qsl card? if you want to do something for that person then you should have done it while they were alive. i was and still am the qsl manager for p5/4l4fn and although i sent out over 10,000 qsl cards the ones that were most memorable were from those that thanked me for their last one. one was from a doctor that was a ham and his patient, also a ham had altzheimers. they put the mic in his hand and asked him to say his call. that got him a card and his last one even though he had no idea or memory of it. i do not expect anything when i become a sk. i have accomplished things i wanted to do and made some happy. when i hand carried p5 qsl cards to spain while on vacation, the joy of those hams was enough. or even all that have received amsat awards i have issued over the past almost 15 years. then if we go further back, i created and operated the very first hal-pc bulletin board when the club was first founded. i ran it with a 300 baud acoustical modem on an apple ii+. you will find no mention of this anywhere at hal-pc. when they were meeting at the sears business center or u of h, i was the one that paid the first months rental at dunffys (spelling) on southwest freeway (was the hotel that was built like a castle). then the club grew and grew. then there was the computer store my wife and i had in houston and corpus chrusti for 18 years. i met many of my current friends there. at bvarc, when i was president, the club gave away hot dogs before the meeting as a way to have an informal eyeball qso. now that i am getting ready to retire, i have my memories, some remember them, some do not. i do not want flowers or even anyone to attend my funeral. a thank you now will be worth more than a hamfest in my honor later. just my 2 cents worth. 73...bruce Sent from my iPhone At Mar 8, 2015, 4:35:58 PM, Travis Burgess via BVARC<'[email protected]'> wrote: I just agreed with Scott. I would argue you can't long sustain one without the other. I had a friend, really only an acquaintance, KD5CB, who passed a week ago. He was rather poor, and his significant other--if you want to call her that--struggled to give him a funeral yesterday. A childhood illness left Mike blind and with organ damage, but he was certainly a character known widely in the Texas HF arena. The sad part is, it will pretty much be as if Mike never existed in a year. That may be the way of life, but it also adds to our abysmal sense of what went into getting us to exactly where we are. Reality is that not all of us will leave behind significant others or squads of heirs, but that does not lessen that human need to be remembered. The assurance of remembrance is our only indication that our lives amount to anything worthwhile. Say what you will, Frosty had a larger influence on the current state of the Houston Amateur Radio community than most of us he left behind. I can grasp that, and I didn't even know or speak to the man. Lumping all the SKs together may be politically correct, but it degrades what was contributed by a industrious few and cheapens the rest of us still further. I wonder aloud: What will we do in remembrance of Pump after he goes? It will most likely not be the same person for all of us. There is an SK member of BVARC who was especially helpful to me. Nothing special was done to honor him. Okay, he was not perfect and had some issues over the years preceding his death. Same with Frosty. In all fairness, if the club were to single out Frosty and name the hamfest in his honor, then retroactively and proactively I think many things need to be done in a similar fashion. Put his name on the SK roster, let those who were close to him do what they will with regard to honoring his life, contributions to ham radio, etc., and move on. ( If there are any we missed please let us know) The listing is pretty much their call and maybe a photo. We could do more in that respect, maybe a little OBIT or something listing service to the club or community… but my opinion, if we as individuals want to do more for Frosty (or anyone) it should be individually and not the club. I mean the club can make an announcement that so and so needs help, or so and so needs funeral money or so and so needs remembered that’s ok. but money should come from individuals pockets (if they want to) not the club. then the club is fair to everyone and the individuals can do what they want for who they want. (or not) I am pretty sure some of the current members are not even aware of the huge ways that Frosty impacted the club and the ham radio world. besides awards from BVARC he served as BVARC president and board member for many years. Many don’t know that Frosty owned a Ham radio store in Houston back in the 80s and 90s called mission communications. when I got licensed I got all my study materials from him. And he had the best sidewalk sales anywhere!!! And he told me he took my old butternut vertical antenna which I gave him and it is still standing somewhere in AFRICA!! How cool is that?? He used to operate from Africe and other places, I don’t even know how many foriegn call signs he had… (a bunch) Not to mention his work in schools and …. well there is a lot I don’t even know… I got my current tower and Log periodic antenna from him… He affected my life in ham radio in so many ways I will never even know them all.!! He was simply a very spacial person.
