The first measure should actually probably be notated as

a4~a8 b c d

If it's notated this way, the beaming works correctly.

Similarly, the second measure should probably be notated as

e8 d c b ~ b4

This would also have the autobeaming  work correctly, I believe.

See example 6-10 in Read.

This page (page 83) also indicates why the beaming in Brahms is 6/8 -- there is simultaneous use of compund duple and simple triple time.

While I think this is still a bug in the autobeaming code (it needs a special start rule that is missing, IMO), I don't think it's proper notation, and fixing the notation will fix the problem.
