Just an update. The windows 7 sp1 machine I used was not able to compile
with
{ a b c d^\markup { \sans "hello" } }
I tried to download GS 9.0.1 and move the binaries to the same directory in
LilyPond that has the GS 8.70 in
C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\share\ghostscript
This didn't change anything but that may have been to do with my crude
attempt to udpate GS.
I can uninstall SP1 from programs and software and when this is done,
Lilypond compiles with no errors
