The problem isn't necessarily specific to MacOS: xpdf is available on many
platforms, and if it installs a pdftotext that doesn't work as groff expects,
that failure can show up anywhere. The underlying problem seems to be that
groff expects certain capabilities from the system's pdftotext without
checking that the installed pdftotext is a version that delivers those
capabilities.
