I read it first as referring to how Bush got elected, but after
reconsideration, I think Nick intended to illustrate what it would take for
him to become president. Taken that way, I'd guess that Nick winning in '08
would probably require magic or hacking.
That was how I took Nick's response. Very literal interpretation of the
question he answered.
Still, "what would you do if elected president" does seem a reasonable way
to ask "what do you think should be done by the President? I think that
thinking of what you would do as President is a reasonable way to think
about which presidential candidate you should favor...so I'm not sure why
Nick doesn't think it's a good question.
I think "what do you think should be done by the President" is a better
question, more accurate as to the POINT John was trying to get to.
And I had been thinking about posting something to that effect, but how
often is the World Fantasy Convention in Austin? :) (I like the way my
weekend got "shot".) (And yeah, it was in Texas in 2000, but it was
down in Corpus Christi and I was having morning sickness 24/7 at that
point.)
