I believe that Dr. Seuss's _The Butter Battle Book_ does something similar, in that there is a war between those who hold their bread butter side up and those who hold their bread butter side down. Had quite an arms race going there in that book.
On a related note... there's an email that's been floating around the internet for a few years that says since buttered bread always lands butter side down, and cats always land on their feet, all you need to do to make an antigravity device is strap some buttered bread butter side up onto the back of a cat and throw the buttered cat out the window...
