It is possible for a woman to ovulate a day or two after her period
ends, if her cycles are extremely short or irregular. If she has sex a
day or two before ovulation, she may become pregnant. She can therefore
have *sex* during her period and then become pregnant, which is the
problem with the 14-year-olds in question.
