<grin> We try not to use the word "impossible" in medicine, as sooner or later we are proven wrong (frex, while essentially 100% of a person's mitochondria come from the mother's side, at least one person has been documented in the literature to have mitochondria from his father). While it is rare to ovulate during the menses part of a woman's cycle, it can and does happen: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=11082086 "Abstinence on specific days of the menstrual cycle remains a method of family planning for many couples worldwide. Women should be aware that no calendar method is completely effective. Our data suggest there are few days in the menstrual cycle during which some women are not potentially capable of becoming pregnantincluding even the cycle day on which they may expect their next menses to begin." The "14 days from ovulation to menstruation" occurred in only 10% of the subjects in this study (ages 25-35); while it is limited by number (N=221) and homogeneity of race (white), I think a larger study will only confirm this variability among women's cycles. Not incidently, some women will have a little blood with ovulation (the egg ruptures through the ovarian surface, and can cause pain ("mitleschmirtz*") as well as some bleeding), and if she has an irregular cycle, she might interpret this as menses.
