John you cannot actually believe that the current adminstration has been building a
consensus. It has been buying and bullying other countries. You cannot believe that we
have not been telling the world for the past two years; screw you we will do what we
want because we are morally superior to you and have the power to do anything we want.
The anti-american sentiment in the world is real. It is inevitable that people will
resent us but Bush has made our situation much more tenuous. All of the irrational
protests over Iraq are the result of the way the high handed way we have gone about
preparing for the war. It did not have to be that way. We had enormous good will after
9/11. A bit of humility would have made it easier to get support for the removal of
Iraq. As to the trade thing. Rational actors would of course trade with us regardless
about their feelings about but as we all know people and nations are not rational
actors. People will in fact do things that disadvantage themselves a little as long as
it disadvantages things they hate more.
