Back when I was travelling a lot for work, I knew that
the only way they would get to be outdoors, most of
the time, was on a leash. So I started getting them
used to being in harness as kittens or young (<1 y.o.)
cats - gave treats liberally, and distracted them by
playing with them while in harness and later on-leash.

I was actually able to 'walk' them (translation: let
them explore at their own pace, but not farther than
the 10' expanse of leash allowed them away from me) --
I got quite a few looks and laughs! They learned to
course more-or-less together, and to pace me off-leash
if we were someplace that I felt was safe to free
them. Kind of like kittens do with their mothers, I
think. They learned to ride in the car as well, and
that "Brace!" meant hunker down with claws in the
seat-fabric, as accel/decel/turn loomed.

At home they are indoor/outdoor cats, and I only
harness/leash them ~once a year to refresh their
aquaintance with the concept...

Let Us Not Speak Of What They Daily Remind Me Maru ;)
