Dear Buddy:

Here, HERE! Great information, and generosity of spirit to share it with us!
You're again, Buddy, exactly right. Daddy loved the music of the Osborne
Brothers & the singing of Bobby Osborne all his life. The Osbornes records
were one of the FEW albums we had in our home-after 1964 when we could finally
afford to have our own record player, that is! Daddy bought us a little
portable model for about $35.00 in early 1964 and after that we could listen to
his music & Bill Monroe & the Osborne's & a few others. We kept that same
little record player until early 1969 when it wore out & Mama replaced it with
a similar model. My younger sister, Jeannie, who was only 4 years old when
Daddy left us cannot remember Daddy hardly at all, but she does remember
listening to that little portable record player & listening to Daddy & the
Osborne Brothers. Mama had one Osborne Brothers record album & 2-3 33's and my
sister played those over & over & over. We all loved "Rocky Top", and wore a
couple of copies of that one out. Didn't they do one called "Ruby, Oh Ruby"
also at some point in time? I recall my Mama & sister & I listening to them
singing that one.

Great information, thanks so much for sharing your wonderful knowledge with us
all. I'd forgotten how much we listened to the Osbornes & loved their music
through the years. They were commercially pretty successful and isn't that
great for them! They probably helped their fellow performers out by bringing
that type music forward & making it more popular.

Keep loving bluegrass & gospel music, it's the best music in this world!

Cordially your friend,

Doris.

" " >> Bros. (arm hair raising)it would be greatly appriciated.
" "
" " > Of course, Nobody can make you feel like the Stanley Brothers do,
" " > But just as one example the Osbournes have some pretty kickin stuff
" " > eh gang?
" "
" " I love the Osborne Brothers. Those classic Decca sides from the 60's were
" " amazing. It's a completely different sound of course...they were perhaps a
" " bit more "pop," commercial, & used drums, electric guitars, piano, steel,
" " etc. on their records (not that there's anything wrong with that). They
" " were clearly going for a radio-friendly sound (nothing wrong with that
" " either).
" "
" " Someone sent me a DVD of a collection of their appearances on the Orpy &
" " other syndicated TV shows in the 60's. That Sonny was a hoss on the
" " banjer,
" " & what a voice Bobby had. I heard he was one of Carter Stanley's favorite
" " singers.
" "
" " But I take "like the Stanley Bros...arm hair raising" to mean more of that
" " lonesome, mountain modal, bluesy feel the Stanleys were known for. If
" " that's what you mean, I might suggest the following contemporary bands:
" "
" " Blue Highway
" " James King
" " Del McCoury Band
" "
" " ...& some older artists like:
" "
" " Dock Boggs
" " Roscoe Holcomb
" "
" " Also, see if you can get a copy of "That High Lonesome Sound: Films of
" " American Rural Life and Music By John Cohen"
" "
" " "That High Lonesome sound compiles 3 landmark films by John Cohen, a
" " member
" " of the folk group The New Lost City Ramblers, who has also devoted much of
" " his energies and talent to documentary filmmaking. These films weave raw
" " intimate images of land, people and work into a portrait of Appalachian
" " life, connecting the sound of American traditional music with the source
" " of
" " its power." He shot it in Kentucky & Virginia, filmed locals who make
" " their
" " own music, filmed revival meetings & primitive Baptist services, filmed an
" " appearance by Bill Monroe in the town square in Hazard, all in grainy
" " black
" " & white. Lots of lonesome mountain music there. I believe Shanachie, the
" " same folks that put out the Rainbow Quest videos, distributes the film,
" " their site is at: http://www.shanachie.com/
