I thought Lester gave Keith that Martin too. I have a live recording of JD Crowe show from a bluegrass festival in the late 1970's in livonia GA. At one time on the recording, Curly (Seckler?) was invited to the stage to sing a few old Flatt and Scruggs tunes. Curly played and sang tenor for Lester for many years, but at that time was part of the Nashville Grass.
While on stage, they had a decently long conversation about Lester giving Keith the guitar because Lester admired him a great deal.
Iv'e always liked that guitar. Does anyone know if CF Martin ever made a guitar with a pickguard like that? Or was that added by Lester? The Martin that Larry Sparks plays resembles it, with the big pickguard.

I thought Lester Flatt gave that guitar to Keith in 1975.

It's hard to say which guitar Keith Whitley used on the "Katy Daley" album. I've seen photos of Keith playing a D-41 Martin during his very early days with Ralph, however he is holding a D-28 on the cover of the Jalyn album "A Tribute To The Stanley Brothers" that he did with Ricky Skaggs and also in the photo on the back of the "Katy Daley" album. At some point he sold the D-28 to Roy Lee Centers. After Keith took over as lead singer following Roy Lee's death, he bought a 1944 D-28 herringbone from Lester Flatt. Keith owned this guitar until he died and played it in his "When You Say Nothing At All" video. I saw him play this guitar several times with both Ralph and J.D. Crowe.
