Well, I personally have over 100 Stanley recordings. I have to say that, to me, Ralph hasn't changed much. I can hear the age in his voice clearly on the new CD, but Ralph has always had an ancient sound. The new CD is a little different, and yet the same. Its really good - I have enjoyed it - but it does lack that CMB drive. The 1970's was clearly Ralph's best years. With Roy Lee Centers, Keith Whitley, Ricky Skaggs, Curly Ray Cline, & Jack Cook, he's never had a better combination! Although, the mid-to-late 70's were great as well with Keith Whitley singing lead. My recent concerns, though, deal with Carter Stanley. I am originally from, and have spent the most of my life in, Abingdon, VA. This is about 1 1/2 hours from McClure, VA. I am the biggest Stanley fan of them all! I have praised this music and all that it means since I was a little boy. The recent "Oh, Brother" surge has given Ralph a taste of what he deserves, but where is Carter? Bill Monroe said that Carter Stanley had the best lead singing voice in all of Bluegrass. Carter deserves everything that Ralph does. I'd love to see him receive his just exposure as well. I really appreciate your e-mail. Keep'em coming! Take care.
