The West Humber Naturalists (based in Kleinburg) were led on a pleasant hike up
and down the Leslie Street Spit by John Watson today. The most notable bird
there - a male Harlequin duck reported by Andrew Keaveny yesterday - WAS
observed by Dan Derbyshire and a few other TRCA banders this morning but was
not discovered by our hopeful crew when we scoped the huge number of ducks
present there. As consolation we had excellent looks at 17 other duck species
including GW Teal, Am. Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Redhead, Canvasback, and the
remarkable number of Hooded Mergs reported by Norm Murr yesterday.

We also had several American Pipits, a few groups of Snow Buntings (the
largest of these numbering 32 birds), three juvenile Black-crowned Night
Herons, two Red-necked Grebes, a trio of White-winged Scoters, two
Yellow-rumped Warblers, a White-crowned Sparrow, a female Am. Kestrel, and a
Northern Shrike. There were numerous Tree Sparrows and, way out at near the
tip of Pipit Point, a Downy Woodpecker that was likely the same one encountered
by Norm yesterday.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 7 hours

Official Counter: Cindy Isenhoff

Observers: Fred Urie

Visitors:
Today's visitors included Jeff Buecking, Andy Shaw and Tim Gundlach from
the Fenton / Holly area of Michigan and Evelyn Fisher of Leamington ON.
Thanks for the help in spotting those birds moving through way to the
north of the tower. And good luck Andy with the move to NC next week.

Weather:
The morning began with 100% cloud cover and haze and temps only about 6
degrees C. Light winds from the South prevailed most of the day, with
some SW influence. Late morning and early afternoon were sunny and
warmer, but by 1:00 pm the clouds were back in full force.

Raptor Observations:
Today's highlight was a very late Broad Winged Hawk that passed low and
close to the tower during noon hour. Flying alone this bird took all on
the tower by suprise!! A decent day for Red Shouldered and Red Tailed
Hawks, but no falcons of any type seen. A few Turkey Vultures still
moving thru, today north of the tower as were most of the hawks.

Non-raptor Observations:
Tundra Swans were seen during several hours today in groups of about 5 each
flight. American Crows continue to move in large flocks....200 plus birds
together.
