Ron Scovell contacted me on April 6 to inform me that he saw a Ruffed Grouse
fly from high in a tree at the east end of the woods at Thickson's Woods
towards the wetland, this being around 4pm. Indeed, I told him that I would
contact area birders to see if a RG has been noted there in the recent past.
Other birds of note in the woods on April 6-- Eastern Towhee, Fox Sparrow,
Winter Wren, Hermit Thrush and Eastern Phoebe.

Exit the 401 onto Thickson's Rd. in east Whitby, south towards the lake,
turning east to park along the north fringe of the pine woods.

While it appears that most of the Snowy Owls which wintered just north of
Waterloo have departed we found a single bird today around noon. This bird
was in a spot where we have not seen any Snowies this winter so it may be
just a migrant passing through from further south. This is probably the 6th
or 7th individual this winter in this general area that we are aware of.
There are still a few Rough-legged Hawks around, plus the odd Eastern
Bluebird has returned.

This bird was seen at the south-east corner of Hergot Rd and Ament Line
(between St. Clements and Hawkesville). To get here travel north on Hwy 85
from Waterloo, exiting at the second King Street exit and turning left
towards St. Jacobs. At the 3rd set of lights (Lobsinger Line) turn left,
and at the main intersection in St. Clements turn right (Hergot Rd). Travel
north until you reach Ament Line (the 2nd road I think).

Good Birding,

Mike Burrell
