2 juv. Buff-breasted Sandpipers were found by Roger Frost this evening, Monday
August 22, on the Port Hope sod farm, and they were still feeding there at 8pm.

Several birders have been checking this area on a regular basis, but usually
from Sylvan Glen Road which runs up the west side of the sod farm. The birds
were not visible from that road today but were easily seen close to Hawkins
Road, a small dead-end road which runs up the east side of the sod farm. They
were among about 100 Killdeer. 3 nighthawks flew south as we were watching the
sandpipers.

Directions:
Exit Hwy.401 at Port Hope/Welcome, Exit 461. Go north on Hwy.2 for less than
1km to a flashing light, where Hwy.2 turns west and Dale Road goes east. Go
east about 2km on Dale Road to Hawkins Road which is only 200 metres or so east
of Sylvan Glen Road, both running north from Dale Road.
The birds were seen actively feeding about 200m north of Dale Road in an area
where the sod farm abuts Hawkins Road and where strips of the sod are being
removed. They were quite close to the road much of the time, but did fly out
towards tractors in the middle of the field at one stage, returning to the edge
of Hawkins Road later.

Ontbirders
This evening, just off Owen Point, I saw four or five Short-billed
Dowitchers near the two Buff-breasted Sandpipers reported earlier by Fred
Helleiner. Among a dozen shorebird species there were at least 50 Baird's
Sandpipers. For directions, see Fred Helleiner's posting.
