OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - FEB 06 2005 AT 8:00 PM

Birds and birders alike were treated to a February thaw this past
week, as well as a few good birds. A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, 1st
discovered on Feb. 2nd in the Rothwell Heights neighbourhood in
the east end of Ottawa was still present today the 6th, and still
seems to favour the Common Buckthorn shrub in front of #38
Rothwell Dr. as well as adjacent trees. A Carolina Wren was also
seen & heard farther south along Rothwell Dr. between # 106 and
#112, most recently reported on the 5th. A Barred Owl was present
near #38 Rothwell on the 4th and 5th. With regard to all of these
birds - PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK THE ROAD, AND PLEASE DO NOT ENTER
PRIVATE PROPERTY.

One male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and one very probable hybrid
Common/Barrow's were seen on the Rideau River behind the Tennis
Club on the 5th, along with the now very tame male Wood Duck.

At least 5 Bald Eagles were at Eardley-Masham Rd. at the entrance
to Gatineau Park, Quebec, on the morning of the 6th. Red-tailed
Hawks appear to be returning to their breeding territories, one
Rough-legged Hawk was seen near Carp on the 2nd and an American
Kestrel was along the 417 near Palladium Dr. the same day. On the
5th, a Peregrine Falcon was on Tower C of Place de Ville in
downtown Ottawa.

A covey of 12 GRAY PARTRIDGE have been present and easily viewable
all week at the northeast corner of Moodie and Brophy Dr.

In owl reports, Great Horned Owls were reported from both the
Clyde Ave. woods and the Britannia woods on the 5th, 2 Snowy Owls
were off Eagleson Rd, 1 at Rushmore Rd. and another at Fallowfield
Dr. on the 5th. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL along ski trail #5 at the
southeast corner of Gatineau Park was last reported on January
31st, and Great Gray Owls continue to be widely reported in the
Ottawa-Gatineau area.

A Belted Kingfisher was fishing at the Thistle Springs trout farm
in Munster Hamlet on the 2nd, and the female Red-bellied
Woodpecker was seen again today the 6th at 6158 Rideau Valley Dr.
south of Manotick.

Good numbers of American Robins for this time of year have been
seen in various locations, and Bohemian Waxwings were seen on the
5th - a small flock at Pinhey's Point along 6th Line Rd. and
approx. 80 along Rifle Rd. just north of Carling Ave.

Northern Shrikes continue to be seen in both rural and suburban
areas. Finch reports from the Lac Lablanche and Eardley-Masham
areas in Quebec since the 3rd included small numbers of Pine
Grosbeaks and White-winged Crossbills, numerous Pine Siskins, and
a few Evening Grosbeaks were in the Lac Lablanche area only.
Common Redpolls are still present in small numbers around the
region.

Thank you - Good Birding!
