Rondeau Daily Report May16/04 A beautiful sunny day but quiet for birds. Most of the warblers seem to have left last night. Migrant warblers still present included Magnolia, Bay- breasted, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Cape May and Canada. Singles each of Blackpoll and Hooded reported. Conspicuous today were the thrushes, unlike the warblers they seem to be here in the same numbers as yesterday. Veery, Grey-cheeked, Wood and SwainsonÂ’s are all present.
An intrepid soul walked the south beach bar today and got WilsonÂ’s Phalarope, Black-bellied Plover, Short-billed Dowitcher, Ruddy Turnstone, Northern Shoveler, Black Tern, a Goshawk and our first Willow Flycatcher of the year. The Acadian Flycatcher was heard this AM in the same place it has been for the past two days - north of the Visitor Centre on the Harrison Trail. PS - 2 Palms were reported late yesterday for a 30 Warbler day at Rondeau yesterday. The Friends of Rondeau are sponsoring two guided hikes daily until May 23rd. It was present at 4:00 p.m. and then disappeared for a while. It takes patience as there is alot of garbage around in the cell. Trucks may be moving about in there tomorrow so if you are still looking to see the bird it may be wise to arrive tonight or early tomorrow. Of course, as usual no guarantees. Directions from Toronto: Take QEW to QEW Niagara. At the exit to QEW Niagara you will see a sign for Eastport Drive. Get onto Eastport Drive and it will wind its way around and over the Burlington Lift Bridge. Continue to follow Eastport Drive past the first Tollgate Pond (large square pond on right) and just east of this there will be a muddy area where they are filling in the pond that was there. The bird is running around on the mud in this area. Good views with a scope but can be seen with binoculars. Directions from Niagara: Take QEW Niagara to Centennial Drive. Get off at Centennial and go north to lake. Turn left at the lights and follow Van Wagners Beach Road past Hutch's Restaurant to a set of lights. At the lights, turn left (Beach Blvd) and follow to Eastport Drive . You will see signs for Eastport Drive, it is a right turn not too long after you get on Beach. Continue along Eastport Drive. The muddy area which it is located on the left just before the large square pond. Cheers, Cheryl
