Hello Ontbirds people,
Just received a message from Paul Jones re: a bird of interest in the Ottawa
area...nothing as spectacular as the Pink-footed Goose, but still a nice
bird for us local types. A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was found by Paul in the
Britannia (AKA Mud Lake) woods ~ 1:20 PM today (April 28), in the far south
area of the woods. This species has recently bred nearby, just across the
river from Britannia on the Quebec side [fide Jean Dubois - the man who
found the Pink-footed Goose].
DIRECTIONS:
Hwy 417 west past downtown Ottawa to Pinecrest Rd. (exit 129). North on
Pinecrest to Richmond Rd. Turn right (east) on Richmond and keep in the
left-hand lane, turn left (north) onto Poulin Ave. which ends at Britannia
Rd. Turn right (north) on Britannia Rd., then right again (east) on Cassels
St. Park along the road near the pedestrian gate which marks the entrance to
Mud Lake. Take the north-south trail as far south as it goes, past the small
inlet/bay at the southwest corner. Even if you don't find the Gnatcatcher,
Britannia is a great location for spring migrants of all kinds!
Good birds to all,
Chris Lewis
Ottawa
