Hello Ontbirders,

On Wednesday, February 4, 2004 we birded Amherst Island for the
day. It was very windy and few raptors were seen in the open fields. We
had 12 Red-tailed and only 2 Rough-legged Hawks. At the east end KFN
property 2 Snowy Owls were perched on the Osprey platforms. The road
into the "Owl Woods" was closed due to snow drifting, so we walked in
from the south side. It was very quiet but we did manage to see 1
Northern Saw-whet, 1 Long-eared, 1 Great Horned and 1 Short-eared Owl.
The island was ice bound except for a few small open leads along
Southshore Road which had a couple of Common Goldeneyes and Common
Mergansers and 2 adult Bald Eagles..
On the way through Kingston did a quick stop at the Dupont Plant Lagoon
and saw about 500 Mallard, 60 American Black Duck, 1 Gadwall and there
were still 4 American Coot.

On Saturday, February 7, 2004 we birded the Ottawa River at Remic
Rapids, Ottawa and observered the 2 male Barrow's Goldeneyes that are
overwintering , there were about 350+ gulls resting on the ice: 320
Great Black-backed Gull, 17 Glaucous,1 Iceland and 11 Herring Gull.

                        all the best
                             Bruce
