Ross's Gull at Point Pelee: This morning at about 9:00 a.m. myself, Alf Rider, and his visiting relatives from California (Paul Turnquest & Beverley Rider) were shocked to see an adult ROSS'S GULL at the Tip of Point Pelee.
The bird flew by at point blank range with just three Bonaparte's Gulls. It came down the west shore (very close), crossed the sand at the Tip, and flew around the corner to the east. About a 1/2 hour later a juvenile Sabine's Gull also flew by. The Ross's had no pink on it, but the undersides of the flight feathers had a flush of dark gray. It looked like a typical winter adult. There is a possibility that this bird could show up around Wheatley Harbour, or the bird might fly past the Tip once more. Bonaparte's at this time of year are extremely nomadic, with hundreds (sometimes thousands) flying past the Tip as they (presumably) travel back-and-forth between the western basin of Lake Erie and areas off Wheatley Harbour, etc. Alan Wormington, Leamington ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
