The fall migration through Selkirk P. P. is well underway with a few
surprises. Earlier this week early in the morning a Common Loon was going
north up Spring Creek as if it was mid April and the spring migration.
The fall hawk banding station in the park is just about completed and the
personnel plan to start Sept. 1st. While working on the station today they
reported watching for about 1 1/2 hours and recorded the following raptors
going west, Turkey Vulture 25, Osprey 5, Bald Eagle 2, Northern Harrier 4,
Sharp-shinned Hawk 3, Cooper's Hawk 1, Broad-winged Hawk 16, Red-tailed Hawk
15, American Kestrel 4. A Merlin was present earlier in the week.
Visitors are warned that a "killer" grouse is on the loose on the west side
of the park. This silly bird comes up behind you and if you stop it may
start to peck at the back of your leg. So far 6-7 complaints have been
received at the park office by campers who have been attacked.
Both Great Horned and Eastern Screech-owls have been heard calling at dawn
this week. A Whip-poor-will was banded mid week. A 1/2 grown Black-billed
Cuckcoo was banded early in the week. Red-breasted Nuthatched arrived in the
park today. Carolina Wrens have started calling again.
There have been a fair selection of Warblers encountered this week in the
park. Of note has been Blue-winged, Golden-winged, Cape May, Mourning of the
15 species recorded.
Bobolinks are going through in good numbers every morning.
Selkirk P. P. is about 1 1/2 miles SW of the village of Selkirk, Haldimand
County
