After considerable searching, I spotted a blob of fur/feathers about
20 feet up a conifer. I crept around the other side for a better view,
and saw a SAW-WHET OWL in plain view. After a long, satisfying look, I
carefully backed out making sure not to disturb it. It's eyes were only
half open, and it looked well fed. Later I saw a crow-sized owl with
tawny wings fly off from the swamp near the banding station.
Please e-mail me privately if you want the specific location for the
Saw-whet. It was found in Selkirk Provincial Park at about 5:00 PM
today.
On the way I saw many flocks of horned larks (both prairie and
northern), and tree sparrows feeding on the many areas of spilled corn
along Reg. Rte. 20, between Byng and Fisherville in Haldimand
county. The steady, wind-drivien rain prevented me from getting better
looks. When the weather improves, check these roadsides out! This road
is also excellent for short-eared owls, harriers, rough leggeds and snow
buntings.
