Volunteer Position at Toronto Bird Observatory for the Spring of 2003: Ontbirds
Toronto Bird Observatory is looking for a fully permitted or sub-permitted bander to run a new banding station that is being established on Leslie St. Spit on the Toronto lakeshore for a six week period from late April to early June, 2003, assisted at weekends by local volunteers. The bander will receive a salary to be arranged but will need to provide their own accommodation within easy reach of the Leslie St. Spit (and will need to provide their own transport to the site depending on the proximity of their accommodation). Applicants should have passerine banding experience to at least sub-permit level and either a good familiarity with eastern North American song-birds or a proven ability to rapidly learn new birds. Toronto Bird Observatory has run a station on Toronto Islands on a weekend basis for the past two decades generally expects to band over 1300 birds of 65 species in any one spring (given our present coverage of only 25 days over a two month period), top species being White-throated Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, both species of Kinglets, and Magnolia Warbler. The new site on Leslie St. Spit is being investigated in partnership with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority as a site for conducting migration monitoring and other banding projects. The Spit has proven over the years to be an excellent location for observing migration and has hosted more than its fair share of oddities. This position will be an excellent opportunity for someone looking to experience an Ontario spring migration in a comfortable setting, within easy reach of downtown Toronto, and meanwhile helping immeasurably in initiating this exciting new project.
