A Report from the Kawartha Lakes
This monday afternoon,we found the RED-NECKED GREBE in the Otonabee
River
2 kms. south of the bridge in Lakefield. It was fishing near a small
island
in the river not far from a flock of 7 male/3 female COMMON GOLDENEYE,
some of whom were practising mating displays.
Directions: Take Rd. 32 for 2 kms.along the river south from
Lakefield,
a community north east of Peterborough ( on Hwy
28).
A RED-TAILED HAWK was seen near the Landfill site on Hwy 36 north of
Buckhorn and on Hwy 49 one km. north of Bobcaygeon a huge flock of
150-200
ROBINS and CEDAR WAXWINGS were foraging among the cedars and buckthorns
south of the Municipal sand domes on the right hand side.
At our own feeders on Anderson Line (2 kms. north of Bobcaygeon ) we
have
witnessed BLUE JAYS come to the rescue of the DARK-EYED JUNCOES,
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS
whenever the local NORTHERN SHRIKE arrives for lunch. The jays who seem
to be on patrol, immediately send out warning calls enabling the smaller
birds to take
cover in time.Is this normal ?
