Yesterday, Feb. 3, 2003, Dave Wilton and I tried for the Northern Hawk Owl on Reid Rd., but were not able to locate it, despite searching for about 4 hrs.

Later in the day, we birded Niagara-on-the-Lake from the park at the mouth of the river, and saw an apparent hybrid Hooded Merganser x Common Goldeneye. Plumage and structure were intermediate between these species. It was associating with Buffleheads, Common Goldeneyes, and White-winged Scoters just offshore. There was also what appeared to be a third-winter "Nelson's Gull" close to shore.

We were also not able to relocate the male Harlequin Duck at Ft. Erie from the parking lots north of the Peace Bridge (there's a LOT of ducks present on the river). However, we did find a nice adult Thayer's Gull south of the Peace Bridge with several hundred Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls loafing on the rocks.
