Conducting a winter birds' tour, some highlights of the past two days were;
Eastern Screech & 5 Long-eared owls, & Eastern Towhee at Long Pt., 36 SE Owls near Fisherville, 3 Bald Eagles (missed 4 Meadowlarks), Brown Creeper, GC Kinglets, Eastern Bluebirds in the Nanticoke area; 27 Rusty, Red-winged Blackbirds, Cowbirds, Savannah Sparrow at Turkey Point .
Today saw drake Harlequin & Black Scoter at Fort Erie again between 2nd & 3rd pulloffs past Chinese restaurants near Peace Bridge, about 20 Ring-necked Ducks, American Coot, many Canvasbacks & Tundra Swans between Ft. Erie & Niagara Falls, plus 1st winter Glaucous Gull. Adam Beck : 1st winter Iceland Gull, Kingfisher, Gt Blue Heron. Very poor between Falls & mouth. Not one Bonaparte's Gull seen on entire Niagara River. 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers on Shakespeare in N-on-the-Lake.
Stoney Creek/ Hamilton area: Surf & WW Scoters, Ruddy Duck, N Shoveler, N Pintail, GW Teal, DC Cormorant. YB Chat not seen for maybe 10 days.
Missed Hawk Owl on Wed. No postings since then suggest it has gone ?
Directions: Long Pt. : Take #24 south from #403 to Simcoe, then west to # 59 south. Nanticoke is west of Turkey Pt. which is west of Long Pt. along Lake Erie. Stoney Pt.: check Grays, Green, Millen & Fruitland roads down to Lake Ontario, as well as Lasalle Park off Hamilton Harbour.
