This morning, Sunday January 19, I lead the Peterborough Field Naturalists to northern Peterborough Co. to look for eagles and winter finches. The pickings were slim and things quiet, but we did manage 2 adult Bald Eagles, one just before the Unimin Mine entrance (on the ridge overlooking the marsh where the OFO group had a second year on a kill last week) and a second at the Anstruther Lake dump. We also had a small flock of White-winged Crossbills on the Jack's Lake Road south of Apsley.
Better directions for White-crowned Sparrows in Geoff Carpentier's Ontbirds post from yesterday follow. Directions: Unimin - from the entrance to the Petroglyphs Provincial Park go east on Northy's Bay Rd. to the T, turn left and go north on Co. Rd. 6. (In Map Art it is where Nephton is marked but the village has been dismantled -literally) The marsh is on the west side of the road just before the entrance to the mine. The ridge behind that. Anstruther Lake dump: On Hwy 28 just south of Apsley turn west and go in the Anstruther Lake Rd. After going up the first major hill and starting down, the dump is on the left hand (south) side of the road. It doesn't open to 1:00 p.m. on Sundays. Some days, it is 9:00 a.m. (The attendents have been known to get to work 1/2 hour early!!!) The eagles usually vacate once the dump has been opened or they have been distrubed. Jack's Lake Road: From Hwy 28 turn east into Apsley on Burleigh Rd/St (Co. Rd. 504) and at the Shell station turn right continuing on Co. Rd. 504. Still within Apsley, make another right onto the Jack's Lake Road. Go 1.8 km south down the Jack's Lake Road and pull over. On the east /left side, there is a bog with a good number of Tamarack. The crossbill were at the north end of the bog. It took 10 minutes with a great deal of "pishing" for the 12 to make a showing. They came from the west side of the road. They were at the same place on the Petroglyphs CBC December 29. Anne Anthony Peterborough White-crowned Sparrows: Yesterday, there were 4 or 5 White-crowned Sparrows coming to a feeder at #1198 Turkey Point Road, south-west of Simcoe. From Simcoe go west on Hwy 3 to Regional Road 10 (Turkey Point Road). This house is just south of the village of Walsh and on the east side before the 5th Concession. (Sorry, Geoff, I forgot to give you the house number) "Anne Anthony" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
