Thuy looks to me like a culture-war politician in the tradition of Richard
Nixon and Karl Rove. Parts of her district are going through demographic
changes that have created a lot of anger and resentment; Thuy gets herself
elected by giving voice to that resentment; she takes the side of the
("decent people"/"real Americans"/"honest, hard-working, long-term
residents"/supply your favorite epithet here) against the criminal
lowlifes on one end of the spectrum, and the smarty-pants elitists on the
other. The "criminal lowlifes," of course, are the new neighbors in
Meadowood. The "elitists" include the mayor, certainly, but also
bicyclists -- if you caricature us shamelessly enough, with sufficient
disregard for truth, we make a nice fat target for a culture-war
politician.
If you're up against someone like Thuy, I'm not sure rational argument
helps persuade her angry, resentful supporters that they really should
support someone else; unfortunately, if you point out the ways in which
she is incompetent and generally embarrassing, you just mark yourself as a
smarty-pants elitist.
Fortunately, people eventually get tired of divisive culture-warriors.
They got tired of Richard Nixon, Bill Dyke (remember him?) and George W.
Bush. Eventually it will be Thuy's turn, too.
I do think, however, that the city can hasten her demise if it does
something constructive about the real social problems in Meadowood. If
the old-line residents stop being scared of and angry at the black
teenagers who moved into the neighborhood, they may start to see Thuy for
what she is.
