Hi Tom,

I'm from Norwegians on both sides, 3 of my great grandparents were born there.
The Nordley name is a farm name (Nordli, meaning something like "north lay"
from eastern Norway, Nordeland north of Kongsvinger near the Sweedish border.
I was the farm of my great-great grandfather's second wife, who was then known
as Ole Knutsen Nordli.  Meanwhile, his son Martin, a shoemaker in Christiana
(now Oslo) had taken up with a Mathilda Andersen also from the Kongsvinger, had
a child (my great uncle Bernt), then decided to move to America. But to share a
stateroom they had to get married!  They were my grandfather Victor Nordley's
(the spelling got anglicized) parents.

On the other side, Ole Olsen Birkeland, was the third son of a landed Norwegian
family (Birkeland farm) a few miles north of Kristiansand (about as far south
as one can go in Norway) who would not inherit any land.  He chose to come to
America with his wife, Maren Severine, and their daughter Gunhild, who took the
name Julia in the U.S. and married Capt. John Ireland.  Julia was my maternal
grandmother's mother.

Norway's ports suffered greatly during the black death.  Someone told me that
so many died, the Swedes just walked in and took over.  In more modern times,
artist Theodor Kittlesen covered both the black death and trolls, but non
necessarily together.  See:

Hi Rick,

Norway is fascinating! I'm curious if there is any folk history about
trolls, specifically about trolls spreading disease. Like when the Black
Death came through. Silly question, and completely hypothetical, obviously.
