If it did it was by chance because no features that would affect the compatibility were introduced at the time. However, as Kern said the bacula 9.x is probably the biggest change in the bacula regarding the number of lines of code. I would advise you to listen the Kern's recommendation and make sure that your bacula-dir and bacula-sd run the same version while you keep your bacula-fd at the same or lower version than bacula-dir/bacula-sd. Even then you might loose some features or bugfixes that's why it's the best to keep all the components at the same version.
