Hi!

My first post to the list...

I browsed through ml's archives and I can see that both DLT & LTO-2
should work nicely with Bacula, but I'm need some advice in choosing
between the two :-)

I have around ~100 hours of video on Hi8 tapes which are getting
converted to DV, needs to be cleaned a bit and then this cut-edit-only
raw material has to be archived.

From that 'raw' material, I plan to produce several 'movies', burn them
to DVD, but I want to archive those 'movies' in DV in order to preserve
quality (in comparison with MPEG).

There are some slide-shows to be produces from scanned negatives...

All in all, I calculate it will be around 2TB of data for storage - in
the beginning.

Besides that I plan to regularly backup my desktop machine (running
Gentoo on amd64), as well as laptop (by connecting it to desktop via
ethernet).

I read lot of reviews on the net, handbooks (about technologies),
studied a bit specs and has arrived at few options...

In the past I used DDS-1 drive made by HP but had lot of problems with
it, so I dumped DAT72 technology and do not want to consider upcoming
DAT160.

Then, I've arrived to the choice between the two technologies (according
to my budget), ie. DLT or LTO-2 taking into consideration total cost
(drive + media) for 2TBs.

In the DLT camp, the option is Quantum DLT-V4, while in the LTO-2 the
option is (again) Quantum LTO-2 HH drive or (more pricey) HP Ultrium
448.

I am interested only for external units, so whichever I choose, I plan
to hook on Adaptec 29160 or 29320 (which one do you recommend?).

So, please, help me.

Which technology to go, DLT or LTO-2 ?

Is the justification in HP's higher price (Ultrium 448) over Quantum's
LTO-2 drive?

Is there any other option I didn't consider?

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Gour (hoping to soon become Bacula user himself)
