I use lto2 (daily) and 3 (weekly), with hp960 external and msl6030 with 2 hp960 drives. I previously used a hp 6/60 dlt4 library with 5 drives.
lto is faster to backup and restore. The drives change speed to match the data transfer rate, which will extend the life of both the drives and the media. The lto media has higher capacity, and cost per data unit is lower. I've been running this config for about 1.5 years with no drive or media problems. YMMV.
