Unfortunately, the ISP where I work receives thousands of bogus challenge e-mails, due to (trivially) forged headers. These are effectively just as bad as spam. Challenge-Reponse systems, in the short term, do not stop spam, but merely gate it to innocent third-parties (in the forged header).
