I also remember that the packager of the X distribution once wrote me,
asking for a modification in `tar' meant only for him to be able to prepare a
distribution without copying all the files, which represented a big penalty
for him in space and speed.  I complied, because he convinced me he had
a real problem.  I'm not really willing to start an argument about this,
but I want to bring to your attention that real large packages might take
good advantage of the optimisation, if available.
