Yep, that's what I meant: we must have a design which is past
oriented, not looking forward.  It's yet an additional little hack
with which we will have to maintain compatibility in the next
releases.

But, OK, enough already, let's go for it, make the patch, and push
Autoconf 2.49a into the real world.
