There are packages that still use autoconf version 1, too, and whose
configure files can't be generated with autoconf version 2, and that
didn't prevent autoconf 2 from being released.
Those of us who have to maintain a large installation of software can just
keep autoconf version 1 installed as autoconf1 and use it when necessary,
and we could do the same with autoconf version 2 until those packages have
been updated or replaced.
