Agreed, but are there examples of this?  Isn't it the responsibility
of Autoconf to perform such tests?

Really, I'm attached to this issue because we have extraordinarily
improved Autoconf wrt cross compilation.  Finally it is
understandable, simple and fully under control.

I find that this dangling $host with several semantics is maculating
the changes, and leave a door opened for mis uses and abuses.  If we
evacuate this, what remains is clear and unambiguous.
