You're touching the untouchable, the GNU standards.  Drop it :)
Anyway, not everybody has an /opt (are your running Solaris? :), and
your suggestion introduces a lot of hidden problems (what of the man
pages, info files, NLS_PATH, libraries etc.).  This is left to the
installer, and it is a good thing.
