What is actually automake 1.4a? Do you mean the current Automake from the
CVS or a certain snapshot?

Why do you say that it "will work"? Do you have some problems with it?

Or you just mean that you want to use the latest Automake to generate
makefiles for Autoconf itself? If yes, why is it so important?
