One thing to realize about how the English site is managed (if you are trying to do something similar), is that we don't really use "roles" (in Plone terms). Instead we use "groups". So, to give someone "author" permissions, we add them to the "authors" group (which has "author" permissions). We sometimes talk about giving someone the "author role", but technically, that's not correct.

Janet, I don't think that is quite true. In the past when I added people to the groups, they did not automatically get assigned the associated role. So Daniel showed me how to assign people to roles as well as groups.

I don't know if Daniel's method is still necessary, since several changes have been made to the website since then. But I use it anyway.

how do you add somebody to the "authors" group and what should an author be able to do?

Leo, here is what Daniel told me to do:

Go to this page, http://oooauthors.org/acl_users/manage_users

Find the person's username and either click on it (to go to a page where you can select the groups and roles for that person) or (if you want to assign the same roles to a group of people) select the checkbox next to the names and scroll to the bottom of the page, where you will fine two column labelled "Affect groups" and "Affect roles". Select the groups and roles there, then click Change. Warning: this page takes forever to load.
