First of all...

Debian /unstable/testing - (Knoppix 3.3 - kernel v2.4.22-xfs - Hdd installed)
ALSA was (finally) gotten to work by gutting the complete system, and booting
the Live CD with the boot cheat-code of ALSA, and then hard drive installed
within that boot.

ALSA is working, not only was it working with the Live CD boot, but is also
working after the hdd install - KDE 3.2 - Info Center in the Sound section
reports that ALSA is emulated, is using MPU, has mixer, and is using my
correct sound card ( VIA Technologies VT82c686 AC97 (rev.50) )

Why I know it is working:
ReZound, Audacity, XMMS, and Xine - from the shell prompt - report finding
sound - and in the case of ReZound, finding the ALSA is stated. If anyone has
been following my problems with ALSA, I have finally gotten rid of that
"noise" that was being introduced into my records, buy re-installing by use
of the boot cheat-codes. Though it did require me to have to re-install a lot
of the stuff I had previously, ALSA appears to be working "fine", and
allowing me to record w/o problems...

This is why I think "parts of alsa are not working":
Alsamixer works fine - but doesn't seem to keep my audio settings through a
user logout and re-login, or a restart of the system. Volume (alsamixer)
settings on returning to the system, go back to defaults (all channels muted,
and volumes of ZERO (0).

I can not run "aplay" - a "locate aplay" brings up no files found.

I can not get any Sound Notifications from KDE, assuming I need to point KDE
to an external player (aplay), this can be because I can't locate aplay.

-=-=-=-=-=-
My business revolves around being able to digitalize analog cassette records,
editing them, and placing them on digital audio CD's - and finally, after
getting rid of the associated "noise" from my recordings, I am back on-track,
and able to do what my customers are paying me for... For this reason,
gutting the system, or trying to remove what is running at this time, to
change ALSA versions, IS NOT AN OPTION. I needed to get ALSA working, and it
"appears" it is, just some of the "parts" are not working as "expected"...

Can we possibly get a resolve on the "parts", and not "fall-back" to gutting
my system, or ripping out the "working" parts to get "not-working" parts to
work????

Thanks for any, and all, assistance,
Ms. Casey Heshler
