Certainly. But how should this work? We have two different ways to access audio hardware: 1) ALSA-native code and 2) the OSS compatibility layer. Also, by default, ALSA-native applications use hw:0,0, correct? So we can't just distribute a config file including 2->5.1 and 2->7.1 setups; that would require the user to specify another device. And it would change depending on how many channels the input has in it and how many output channels there are.
