because it is NOT a mature product. Both alsa and linux kernel are not mature as far as audio work goes - alsa only fairly recently stabilized API and linux kernel still requires patches for low latency audio (well, AFAIK 2.6 doesn't require patches anymore but that's very recent development)
so while you are pretty much right that alsa is not easy to configure, it's not easy to figure out what is supported for particular cards etc. it's all work in progress. Maybe it's not for you at this time (that's not elitist remark, alsa simply does not provide what you want _at this time_)

I was reluctant to mix music with computers because music is how I relax whereas computers are what stresses me out. I chose to dabble in Linux ( as
sidenote: I know you know it but keep it mind that computers are very generic devices and the fact that they can stress you out as well as provide entertainment/relaxation is natural. so _I_ don't worry about mixing them into my work AND hobbies (not all my hobbies involve computers though:-) YMMV
