i had a similar problem. maybe this will help you: start alsamixer and make sure the channels 'VIA DXS' are all set to 100%. Did you use KDE? On my system, kmix (or kcontrol or whatever) reset these channels to zero. A 'dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base' solved the problem until KDE tries to do some audio again...
