I compiled my modules using a Debian packager thingy. I downloaded the latest ALSA source (0.9.8) using apt, along with alsa-base and alsa-utils. Then I used make-kpgk to make a deb file for the alsa modules. The error comes when I try to install the deb file.
For some reason snd.o will load fine, along with all the other snd-xxx modules (pcm, seq, etc...) but it gives me problems snd-emu10k1.o.
I think I am also going from 0.9.7 to 0.9.8 so I had both alsa and alsasound in my init.d directory. So I replaced all the links to alsa with alsasound. Still no luck though.
I actually just got finished deleting every trace of anything related to alsa on my box and redoing the whole process. Still no beans. Any other good ideas? Thanks a ton for the help!!!

I'm just getting finished with something similar. I'm sure there's a better
way, but this was how I got it to work:
I followed the instructions from
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=CompilingTips

It didn't work, so I tried again.
After the reboot, I did a modprobe and noticed that the modules were loaded,
so I continued with the install. But then it didn't work again. The third
try, I went as far as rebooting and quit. I now have sound.

Another snag I ran into in the middle was that I had 0.9.7 and I was moving
to 0.9.8. This was causing me problems until I went in and got rid of the
alsa service that was starting by the init scripts (I used sysv-init to
edit). Version 0.9.7 called it alsa, but 0.9.8 calls it alsasound. I replaced
all occurences of alsa with alsasound in the various run levels.

I don't know if this will work for you, but it may at least give you some new
ideas.

I compiled kernel 2.6 using the new preemption option.
I also set pnp os to on in the bios, and I'm using acpi.
