Hi,

I am happy to report that my card is finally working as it should.
Here is what I did:

I enabled aRTsd from the commandline to see if there were any
errors that I could work with:

This is the commandline that I used at first:
artsd -a alsa -d -D plug:spdif

This gave me the following errors:

ALSA lib setup.c:94:(snd_sctl_install) Cannot lock ctl elem
Error while initializing the sound driver:
Unable to set hw params!

It seems that I had to disable full duplex support (-d). Once I did
this it was running and I had sound.
It seems that even the sound is now crystal clear, without the
strange spike at the end of every sound sample.

Looking at the modules that get loaded through hotplug I noticed
that the oss modules are not loaded automatically. At first I loaded
them manually through rc.modules but it seems I don't need them
for my sound playback (probably because I selected ALSA for playback
and the modules are only there as an OSS wrapper).

Since I didn't want to start the artsd manually every time I got into
kde I used the control center to make the following configuration
changes:

aRts
Start aRts soundserver on KDE startup
Sound I/O
Sound I/O method: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
        Enable full duplex operation: unchecked
        Other custom options: -D plug:spdif

As I told before full duplex has to be disabled. I thought this had
to be enabled so that I could hear multiple sounds at once but this
doesn't seem to be the case and I don't even need dmix for this.
The Sound I/O method is normally on Auto. Even though I tried this
it doesn't work. Alsa is not properly detected. Maybe in the current
cvs version of kde this will work but since I'm still in the process of
compiling a current cvs version I am unable to test this.

There was one thing I noticed. The sound volume is up by default for the
spdif output. Not that I mind since it is simpler for me but for analog it is
off by default so I wondered if there is a reason for this?

I would like to thank everyone for their help with this and now I am finally
able to enjoy the sound in Linux the way that I like.
If there is any need for anyone to have a kind of documentation of how
to proceed with this card (Terratec Aureon Space 7.1) and what to do
then let me know and I will see what I can do.

Thanks,

Dennis
