I'm attempting to build a Linux box that will plug into a home theater system with Optical Audio input. I've been told that the only digital audio chip ALSA supports for optical output (what about input?) is the C-Media 8738. It's difficult to tell from the ALSA status page, but it seems like S/Pdif from other chips is starting to work. Can someone clarify the situation? Originally I was going to look for a motherboard with S/Pdif but I have been discouraged from doing that -- it was suggested I buy a separate sound card.
This machine will eventually be used for audio/video timeshifting, radio, TV, Ogg, etc. all pumped through the home stereo system (also yet to be purchased). I'm new to all of this (advanced audio -- I've been doing Linux for years and years) so it's a bit overwhelming.
Can anyone shed light on the ALSA S/Pdif situation? Thanks!
-Dave
