I am going to test 2.5.x soon, but I need a larger time slot for this :-) Alsa 
is included in the kernel tree, no external ALSA packages need to be 
installed, right?

I found out meanwhile, that the problem must be related to how applications 
access the /dev/dsp device, as I successfully established duplex audio 
connections using linphone (uses oss too) with the USB headset in perfect 
quality :-)
