Linux 2.4.x is well-known for its poor scheduling capabilities, causing lagging X11 graphics and sound underruns etc. pp. AFAIK 2.4.21 has some improvements added, 2.4.20 has NOT. But better try using latest (or almost latest, to make sure the version is known to not have catastrophic effects) 2.5.x kernel. Should be MUCH better due to MUCH improved scheduling.
